Materials:

  • Wood planks (2 in. x 4 in. x 96 in.)

  • 2 Trianglular wooden frames

  • Nylon rope

  • Wood glue

  • Bunge Cord

  • Cricket pad

  • Steel bowl

  • A Tennis ball

  • Nails

  • Portable Band Saw

  • Drill

  • Safety Goggles

  • Measuring Tape

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

Procedure:

  1. Researched on all the different types of catapults and produced a blueprint of the catapult

  2. Gathered all the materials that were needed to start building the catapult

  3. Got two wooden planks and measured them with a measuring tape and marked the length to 4ft.

  4. Used the Portable Band Saw and cut the wooden planks in half.

  5. Formed a square shape using those cut wooden planks

  6. Applied glue on each side of the plank and clamped them in a square shape as seen in pictures below.

  7. Waited for the glue to dry a little bit

  8. Screwed two to three nails per plank to secure the plank from moving

  9. Repeated step 3 and 4 for another wooden plank

  10. Measured around 2.5 feet on two sides of the plank using measuring tape and marked it using a pencil.

  11. Placed the newly cut planks perpendicular to the base from that marked area.

  12. Applied wooden glue on it, stick the planks and waited for it to dry a little then screwed it using the drill

  13. Cut another wooden plank in half and placed it perpendicular to the previous two planks by gluing it and then screwing it with the drill

  14. A cricket pad was placed on it so when the arm hits the plank it will have some cushion to soften the impact.

  15. To make the arm we used a 1.5m long wooden frame (it is flexible) and placed a hook on to it at 0.90m. Then we drilled the steel bowl on to the ADT sign and the ADT sign on to the arm.

  16.  To help with making the torsion we watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRSBKm1encM

  17.  Tied a bungee cord in front of the catapult and hooked the other side of the cord to the hook on the arm.

  18. Used tennis ball to test the catapult

The Meeting

The Meeting

The 2nd meeting took place on Saturday, April 18th, 2015. It was quite successful because we finished creating the base of the catapult.

The Extra Hand

The Extra Hand

Jasmit knew a young woodworker who enjoys playing "Tujhe Dekha to Yeh Jaana Sanam" on guitar and asked him to work with the Syndicate.

We also got the young man to donate some wood.

The Scaffolding

We used a drill and screws to create a 4X3 ft base.

It was a mission trying to drill in the triangular support pieces into the base. So, we made holes in the triangle pieces and held the base against a wall in order to drill the pieces together more easily.

We had to problem solve a lot, here we used a piece of wood to make sure the triangle pieces do not fall down.

We finished with a rectangular base and 2 right triangle pieces that will be used to stop the swinging arm.

Hopefully, Shahrukh Khan can give us autographs (and a tour of Mannat) because of this gift.

Day 3 was Thursday, April 23rd. In order to make the arm, we used a sliding closet rail, and an ADT security sign.

Links For Days

Links For Days

Day 1:

On day 1, the Syndicate was able to secure a location in which the catapult will be made. Since Jasmit had links in Bucktown, he was able to get A-list real estate agent, Mr. Lall to list him a house in which the catapult could be manufactured.

Also on day 1, previously leftover materials were inspected in order to determine if they could have been used in the creation of the catapult. It was determined that some material could have been used, such as the MDF wood pieces and some boards of wood; however, cricket bats and a large staff were other materials that were found. They unfortunately were not as useful.

Day 2:

On day 2, the Syndicate created the base of Shahrukh Khan's gift: the Khan Catapult. Although, we work with a low budget on most of our other missions, here, we were not going to spare any expense. Or atleast we thought, until we realized that we did not need to spend anything because we already had a drill and screws in addition to some oak wood and some extra MDF wood.

Furthermore, Jasmit had links. He knew a young boy named Harjot, who is a wood-working enthusiast and got him to help the Syndicate in making the Khan Catapult. All Jasmit did, was feed him and tell him the catapult was being made for Shahrukh Khan. Since Harjot enjoys playing "Tujhe Dekha to Yeh Jaana Sanam"  on guitar, he immediately hopped onto our Shahrukh Khan love boat.

The final product of day 2, was a 4ftX3ft base with right triangles on each 4ft side. The base looked and felt strong; as a result, the Khan Catapult felt promising.

Day 3:

On day 3, the Syndicate built the arm for the catapult. We used sliding closet rails and an ADT sign. Initially, we though making it out of metal would be ideal because it would not break.

We also worked on the impact taker; we screwed two pieces of wood on the catapult. However, we had to add extra cushioning because without the cushioning, the wood would crack. Therefore, we added a cricket pad.

We made some mistakes, most notably, drilling a hole in the wrong area, we corrected that error by filling the hole with wood glue.

On Friday, April 24th, we asked an advisor about our arm, he told us that it was not a good idea, because if we could bend it with leg pressure, it would bend during the launch, he was right; therefore, we had to fix and test our arm and our impact taker. We tried hitting the impact taker with a cricket bat and noticed that it was not strong enough because the wood moved when it was hit by a cricket sixer shot.

Day 4:

Day 4 was testing the durability of the arm and the impact taker. First, in order to test the arm, we struck it with a broom stick. The result: the broom stick bent.

In order to test the impact taker, we struck it with a cricket bat. The result: the cricket bat broke.

The arm was also completed. The image below shows the completed arm.

In addition to testing the arm and impact taker, we also worked on shooting the Khan Catapult commercial. The acting could have been improved upon; therefore, we had to schedule re-shooting another day. For Shahrukh Khan, we have to have the best acting and the best story.
